Creating a Memorable PD Day

Nexus recently took time to pour back into our Monarch School Project staff, and we had the privilege of hosting an incredible professional development day! Read more about our PD day below and download our tips for planning your own PD day here.

At Monarch School Project, our integrated Model is more than a framework for working with students and families. It guides every part of our organization, and its impact grows when our entire team practices it together. By modeling, reinforcing, and nurturing these approaches within our staff, we strengthen their capacity to bring the work to life each day. Last month, we had the privilege of hosting a staff development day that truly reflected our four core approaches in action.

Expand each section for an example of what the core approach looked like in a professional development setting.

  • Example: Affirm others by noticing and naming positive things and providing evidence.

What it looked like: We created a list of concrete ways to practice our four core approaches. Staff then had the opportunity to recognize and affirm places where these approaches show up in their own work and in the work of their colleagues.

  • Example: Take breaks and offer them to others.

What it looked like: We built in generous breaks throughout the day and offered staff the option to take their lunch to go if they needed some quiet time to recharge.

  • Example: Provide opportunities for voice and choice.

What it looked like: We gathered staff input ahead of time and used their responses to shape the training content. They also chose a wellness session to begin their day.

  • Example: Establish new connections and deepen existing ones.

What it looked like: Through our Embodied Cultural Humility Training with Imagine, we were able to engage in deeper conversations with colleagues.
